Education sector planning: working to mitigate the risk of violent conflict

This paper examines the relationships between natural disasters (and climate change) and violent conflict. It briefly reviews the evidence that disasters and climate change, by causing resource scarcity and/or triggering displacement and migration, can lead to violent conflict. While these effects have been studied by others (Nel and Righarts, 2008), too little attention has been paid to how educational planning helps to mitigate the effects of natural disaster, and thereby averts conflict.
