In the light of the importance of an accreditation system in the enhancement of quality in higher education in the Philippines, this paper has the following objectives: to trace the history of the accreditation system; to relate the system to the development of higher education in the country; to identify its critical issues; to analyze problems, issues and solutions in the implementation of accreditation schemes; to evaluate the impact of accreditation on selected institutions and on the entire higher-education system in the country.
