The South African SACMEQ III report tracks developments in the levels and quality of educational outcomes and the conditions that might have impacted on the quality of education since the release of the SACMEQ II report. Chapter 1 sets the scene for the results of the Standard 6 study that has been reported in ensuing chapters. The aim of Chapter 2 is to describe the research procedures that were applied for the execution of the SACMEQ III project. Chapter 3 presents comprehensive information on some of the characteristics of Standard 6 pupils and their homes. Chapter 4 examines some of the characteristics and experiences of Standard 6 teachers. Chapter 5 looks at characteristics of school heads and their viewpoints on school operations and school problems. Chapter 6 focuses on school resources in Malawi primary schools. Chapter 7 deals with reading and mathematics achievement levels of Standard 6 pupils and their teachers. Chapter 8 describes HIV and AIDS knowledge levels and attitudes of pupils and teachers. Chapter 9 presents the research-based policy suggestions that have been made in the preceding chapters as an agenda for action.
